RouteKeeper GPS Privacy Policy
Overview
RouteKeeper GPS ("RouteKeeper," "the app," "we," or "our") is developed and published by Michael Sloane as a single-developer, independently operated iOS application. This Privacy Policy describes how RouteKeeper handles information in connection with your use of the app.
RouteKeeper is designed from the ground up to be privacy-respecting. The app requires no account creation, collects no personal information for our own purposes, and does not communicate with any servers we operate.
Information We Collect
We do not collect any personal information. RouteKeeper does not gather, transmit, store, or share any data with the developer or any third party. Specifically:
-
We collect no names, email addresses, or contact information.
-
We collect no device identifiers or advertising IDs.
-
We collect no usage analytics or behavioral data.
-
We have no backend servers that receive data from the app.
Location Data
RouteKeeper's core purpose is GPS navigation and track recording. To do this, the app accesses your device's location services via Apple's Core Location framework. This access is used solely to:
-
Display your current position on the map.
-
Record GPS breadcrumb trails and track logs during your outdoor activities.
-
Calculate distance, speed, heading, and elevation for your tracks.
-
Help you navigate back to saved waypoints and locations.
Your location data never leaves your device except through your own personal iCloud account for sync (see Section 4). We never see your location. It is not transmitted to any server we control, and it is not shared with any third party.
Location access requires your explicit permission, which iOS will prompt you to grant when you first use the app. You can review or revoke this permission at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → RouteKeeper GPS.
When background track recording is enabled, the app continues to access location data while running in the background. This data is used exclusively to continue recording your current track and is stored locally on your device.
iCloud Sync
RouteKeeper uses Apple's CloudKit framework to automatically sync your waypoints, tracks, and settings across your personal Apple devices. This sync occurs through your own private iCloud account.
-
Synced data is stored in your personal iCloud container, which only you can access.
-
We have no access to your iCloud data. Apple's iCloud infrastructure handles the sync entirely.
-
iCloud sync is subject to Apple's own Privacy Policy, available at apple.com/privacy.
If you do not use iCloud or have it disabled, RouteKeeper stores all data locally on your device only. No data leaves your device in that case.
Third-Party Services and SDKs
RouteKeeper uses only Apple's own first-party frameworks, including MapKit, Core Location, SwiftData, and CloudKit. We do not integrate any third-party SDKs, analytics libraries, advertising networks, or crash reporting services that could collect data about you or your usage of the app.
Map tiles and mapping data are provided by Apple Maps (MapKit). Apple's data practices for MapKit are governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
Data Retention and Deletion
All data created in RouteKeeper — your tracks, waypoints, and settings — is stored on your device and, if iCloud is enabled, in your personal iCloud account. You are in complete control of this data at all times.
-
You can delete individual tracks or waypoints from within the app at any time.
-
Deleting the app from your device removes all locally stored data.
-
To remove data from iCloud, you can delete it within the app, or manage your iCloud storage directly in iOS Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Storage.
Because we collect no data ourselves, there is no data held by us to request deletion of.
Children's Privacy
RouteKeeper does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. The app contains no account creation, no data collection, and no features that would present a privacy concern for minors. Because no personal information is collected from any user, the app is appropriate for all ages from a data privacy standpoint.
Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of RouteKeeper after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
Given the nature of the app — no data collection, no backend, no accounts — we do not anticipate this policy requiring significant changes over time.
